West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that the State Assembly would convene next week to pass a Bill ensuring capital punishment for those convicted of rape. Her announcement comes amid ongoing protests over the recent rape and murder of a trainee doctor at R.G. Kar Hospital in Kolkata.
Speaking at the foundation day event of Trinamool Congress’ student wing, Banerjee said the Bill would be sent to Governor C.V. Ananda Bose, though she expressed doubts that he would approve it. "If the Governor doesn’t pass it, we will protest outside Raj Bhavan," she asserted.
Banerjee also praised the State police for their actions during protests on Tuesday, claiming that despite the intensity of the demonstrations, the police maintained control. She emphasized the need for quick justice, pushing for fast-track court trials and capital punishment for rapists within seven days.
The Chief Minister also criticized the central government, stating that there had been no calls for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resignation over incidents of violence in states like Uttar Pradesh and Assam.
