Mumbai, India – Renowned Indian scholar, lawyer, and political commentator Abdul Ghafoor Majeed Noorani, popularly known as A.G. Noorani, passed away at the age of 93. Noorani, a prominent figure in Indian legal and political circles, was born on September 16, 1930, in Bombay (now Mumbai) and led an illustrious career spanning several decades.
A distinguished alumnus of St. Mary's School and Government Law College, Mumbai, Noorani was known for his sharp legal acumen and insightful commentary on a wide range of issues. He practiced as an advocate in the Supreme Court of India and the Bombay High Court, earning respect for his dedication to justice and his deep understanding of constitutional matters.
Throughout his career, Noorani’s columns were featured in prominent publications such as Hindustan Times, The Hindu, Dawn, The Statesman, Frontline, Economic and Political Weekly, and Dainik Bhaskar. His work extended beyond journalism as he authored several influential books, including The Kashmir Question, Ministers' Misconduct, The Trial of Bhagat Singh, Constitutional Questions in India, and The RSS and the BJP: A Division of Labour. He also penned the biographies of significant figures like Badruddin Tyabji and Dr. Zakir Husain.
Noorani’s legal expertise was highlighted in his defense of Sheikh Abdullah of Kashmir during his prolonged detention and his representation of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi in the Bombay High Court against his political rival, J. Jayalalitha.
A.G. Noorani’s death marks the end of an era for Indian legal and political scholarship. His contributions to the understanding of complex legal and political issues in India will be remembered and studied for years to come. He is survived by his family and a legacy of intellectual rigor and commitment to the pursuit of justice.
