DAURA and BHAUNRI | Anukrti Upadhyay | Karvaan India
About the Books -------------------------------- A young District Collector is posted to one of the furthest outposts of rural Rajasthan and finds himself drawn deeper and deeper into the lives and troubles of the common people there. Then one day, with the help of a mysterious musician, the Sarangiya, he has an encounter with beauty in its purest, most absolute form – an encounter that precipitates a dangerous descent. The pages from the journal he keeps are combined with the narratives of various people around him to create a compelling account of his slide away from reality Can too much love be a dangerous thing? Bhaunri is married, as is the custom in her tribe of nomadic blacksmiths, when she is still a child. When she is finally sent away to her husband’s home as a young woman, she finds herself drawn deeply and powerfully towards the gruff and handsome Bheema. Bheema, however, is far from the ideal husband, and when he strays one time too many, Bhaunri’s love for him begins to fester and grow into something dark and fearsome. This is a story of obsessive love and the destructive power of desire. -------------------------------- About the Author -------------------------------- Anukrti Upadhyay has post-graduate degrees in Management and Literature, and a graduate degree in Law. She writes in both English and Hindi; Daura and Bhaunri are her first publications in English. In her other life, she worked in a global investment bank as a Compliance and Risk Officer. She divides her time between Mumbai and Singapore. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Organized by --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Karvaan India in collaboration with Harper Collins India At Karvaan Open Studio, Abdul Rab Apartment, Ghaffar Manzil Colony, Jamia Nagar, Okhla, New Delhi, 110025 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Visit and follow us at --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Webiste: https://www.karvaanindia.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/KarvaanIndia Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/karvaanindia/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/KarvaninIndia/

[Walk] Exploring the DJINS of Firozabad | Karvaan India
Reminiscent of the ‘City of Djinns’ (William Dalrymple), a site filled with the spirituality of wandering saints and fakirs, the fortress is one of the few unexplored, non-conventional places of ritual worship. A curious paradox of believers and non-believers flood this site on a regular basis, perhaps due to a reason that goes beyond the boundaries of logic or maybe it’s just for the uncertainty and thrill of a mystic place belonging to a more fantastical universe. The believers write letters to the resident djinns with the hope of appeasing their wants and gaining miraculous wishes in return. Offerings of milk, sweets, fruits, and meats are made on a regular basis as you walk along, dark old walls stuck with coins, which reflect the desires of their devout hearts. It stands witness to the countless deepest, darkest secrets that believers divulge in their pursuit of faith. Some even stand by their stories of being miraculously cured from physical ailments and recovering from cases written off by most of the well-reputed doctors the city has to offer. Hence, it’s no surprise that the place is also a house to regular exorcist practices. It is a space where rationality and science find themselves bowing their heads in defeat.

Deep Haldar | Blood Island: A Forgotten Massacre of Dalits in Bengal | Karvaan India
About the Book --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Forty-years have passed since the Jyoti Basu-led Left Front government in West Bengal resorted to savage means to evict Hindu refugees from an island – known as Marichjhapi in the Sundarbans, situated 75 kilometres east of Kolkata. According to survivors’ estimation, the operation might have led to as many as 10,000 deaths. The massacre that took place in 1979 is a horrifying instance of human rights violations. Journalist Deep Halder’s book Blood Island: An Oral History of the Marichjhapi Massacre serves as a reminder of the tragedy, which has practically disappeared from public memory. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Organized by --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Karvaan India At K-Café, Abdul Rab Apartment, Ghaffar Manzil Colony, Jamia Nagar, Okhla, New Delhi, 110025 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Visit and follow us at --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Webiste: https://www.karvaanindia.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/KarvaanIndia Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/karvaanindia/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/KarvaninIndia/
